Keeping Your Bank Accounts Safe with Secure Contact Listing Practices

In the blink of an eye, life can change. That’s what happened to one woman when her handbag containing her mobile phone, wallet, credit card and other items was stolen. Her husband answered a text on her phone asking for their pin number and then they rushed down to the bank only to find out all the money had already been withdrawn. How did this happen? Let’s take a closer look at why this valuable lesson is so important for community bank customers.

This story illustrates how powerful a mobile phone can be in our lives. We use them for almost everything now- calling or texting family and friends, taking pictures or videos, listening to music, checking emails and so much more. But they are also vulnerable if not kept secure. It took just 20 minutes for the thief to get hold of the pin number that was sent by text message and then withdraw all the money from their bank account.

The lesson here is to always keep your mobile phone secure and never share your passwords or pin numbers with anyone—even through text messages. If you have contacts saved in your address book as “hubby” or “wifey” it may be time to change them! This small step could help protect you from becoming another statistic from someone taking advantage of mobile security weaknesses.

Community banks offer additional security measures that can help protect customers against fraud like this example. Many banks now offer biometric authentication which uses fingerprints or facial recognition technology to log into accounts instead of using passwords or pins. Banks are also introducing two-factor authentication which requires two pieces of information (a password plus an authentication code) in order to access an account online or via a mobile app. These security measures provide an extra layer of protection against fraudsters trying to gain access to accounts without permission.

This story serves as a reminder that we must always remain vigilant when it comes to protecting our personal information online—especially with our mobile phones! Keeping your contacts private, changing passwords regularly and having additional security measures like biometric authentication set up are all excellent steps towards staying safe while banking online with a community bank. Don’t let something like this happen to you; take control over your safety today!

How to Keep Your Valuables Safe When You’re Away

Traveling can be a wonderful experience, but it can also lead to unexpected surprises. Recently, a group of travelers returning from their trips were shocked to discover that their cars had been broken into while in long-term parking at the airport. What made this crime even more alarming was that the robbers used information found in the glove compartment—such as car registration and insurance cards—to break into people’s homes and rob them. In this blog post, we will discuss how you can keep your car and valuables in it safe when you’re away on vacation or business trips.

Secure Your Valuables Before You Leave

One of the easiest ways to protect your car is to make sure it is secure before you leave for your trip. This means locking all doors and windows, placing valuables out of sight, and taking any keyless entry remotes with you. It is also important to remember not to leave any documents in the glove box such as registration or insurance papers. These items are prime targets for thieves and can be used to locate your home address or other personal information.

Utilize Airport Security Features

Many airports now offer additional security features for long-term parking lots such as video cameras, motion sensors, and even armed guards patrolling the area. If available at your local airport, these options can provide additional peace of mind before leaving for your trip. Additionally, many airports require drivers who park in long-term lots to register their license plate numbers before leaving so that they can be identified, if necessary, by airport security personnel.

Take Advantage of New Technology

In addition to traditional methods of protecting cars from theft or vandalism while away on trips, new technology provides even more options for keeping cars safe and secure while traveling. Many vehicles now come equipped with GPS tracking systems which allow owners to monitor their car’s location remotely and alert authorities if there is suspicious activity detected around the vehicle. Additionally, some automakers now offer subscription services that provide access to real-time data regarding the location and condition of vehicles while they are away from home.

No one likes coming home from a trip only to discover that their car has been broken into or even worse stolen altogether! However, there are steps you can take—such as securing valuables before leaving for a trip, utilizing airport security features when available, and taking advantage of new technology—that will help protect your car from theft or vandalism while you are away! So next time you hit the road for an extended period of time, keep these tips in mind so that you don’t have any unpleasant surprises waiting for you upon your return!

What You Can Do To Protect Yourself From Phone Scams

There are many steps you can take to protect yourself from falling victim to phone scams like this one. First and foremost, always be wary of too-good-to-be-true offers over the phone or online. If someone claims they can help you receive money or get out of debt for free, chances are it’s too good to be true and it’s a scam. Second, do not give out any confidential information over the phone or online, even if you think you know who you’re talking to. This includes your address, Social Security number (SSN), bank account numbers, or credit card numbers. Finally, never sign blank forms or accept pre-paid cards from unknown parties as they may be part of a scam.

It's also important that customers of community banks remain aware of their financial institution's security measures when banking online or over the phone. Many community banks offer additional layers of security such as strong authentication methods like two-factor authentication which requires users to enter both their password and an additional code sent via SMS text message before accessing their accounts online. Financial institutions should also provide customers with resources on how to recognize and avoid potential fraudsters when engaging in digital financial transactions such as email phishing scams or malicious mobile apps targeting customer credentials through phony banking websites or apps masquerading as legitimate banking service providers.

Phone scams can have devastating consequences if victims aren't careful about who they trust with their personal information over the phone or online. Knowing what red flags to look out for—like too-good-to-be-true offers—can help protect your assets from falling into the wrong hands. Additionally, remaining aware of your community bank's security measures when banking online is essential in order to keep your finances safe and secure at all times! By following these tips and being vigilant against potential scammers, you can rest assured that your hard-earned money will stay where it belongs—in your account!

Financially savvy kids = financially successful adults

Anytime is a good time to start teaching financial responsibility. Educate the children in your life and secure a healthy relationship between earning, spending, and saving.

It’s important to teach children of all ages the necessary skills to make effective and informed money management decisions.

Make sure children know the basics.

  1. You need money to buy things.
  2. You earn money by working.
  3. There’s a difference between needs and wants.
  4. People work and earn money to buy what they need and some wants.
  5. Save money to use later as needs and wants arise.
  6. Your savings has a chance to grow with compound interest.
  7. Giving out personal financial information can be dangerous — ask a parent or guardian first.
  8. Check your CNB Bank & Trust, N.A. account balance before making a debit card purchase.

There are multiple money management teaching tools. You can start with a simple allowance and progress into more advanced options as your children get older.

Provide children the opportunity to learn about managing their own money.

  • Give children a weekly allowance. It can be:
    • Tied to household chores.
    • A commission- or performance-based allowance.
  • Use envelopes or jars for spending and donating.
  • Support entrepreneurial options such as a lawn mowing business.
  • Open a CNB Bank & Trust, N.A. savings account in your child’s name to teach budgeting and investing.
  • Keep the dialog open with an appropriate amount of detail.

Ask us how to open a checking or savings account for the children in your life and turn financially savvy kids into financially successful adults!

If Get My Payment on IRS.gov shows a date that your payment was mailed, watch your mail for either a paper check or debit card.

IRS and Treasury urge eligible taxpayers who don't receive a direct deposit to watch their mail carefully during this period. The prepaid debit card, called the Economic Impact Payment (EIP) card, is sponsored by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and is issued by Treasury's financial agent, MetaBank®, N.A. The IRS does not determine who receives a prepaid debit card.

EIP Cards are being sent in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal. The EIP Card has the Visa name on the front of the Card and the issuing bank name, MetaBank®, N.A. on the back of the card. Each mailing will include instructions on how to securely activate and use the EIP Card.

Cardholders can also use the cards to do any of the following without paying a fee:

  • Transfer funds to a personal bank account
  • Make signature or PIN-debit purchases anywhere Visa Debit Cards are accepted — in stores, online or over the phone
  • Get cash back with a PIN debit purchase where available
  • Get cash from in-network ATMs
  • Get a replacement EIP Card, if needed
  • Check their card balance online, through a mobile app or by phone

If you received a card, more information is available here: https://www.eipcard.com/

As part of an ongoing effort to keep our CNB PPP clients up to date on changes to the PPP, we are sharing this summary of the most recent changes to the Program.

Here’s PPP under the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 at-a-glance:

  • $284 billion has been allocated to PPP (including $138 billion of unspent loans from the first round that were reinvested) and the program has been extended to March 31, 2021
  • Second-draw loans are available for businesses with under 300 employees
  • Businesses eligible for PPP loans has been expanded
  • Loan limitations have been expanded for certain businesses
  • Forgiveness for loans under $150K have anew, simplified one-page application
    • While expenses eligible for forgiveness still require a 60/40 split of payroll costs/other eligible expenses, group health insurance benefits are now included in payroll costs (and these entail life insurances, disability benefits, vision, and dental insurance)
  • Eligible expenses for forgiveness have been expanded (for first-draw loans that have not yet been forgiven and for second-draw loans)
  • Borrowers are allowed to choose a covered period that is any period of time between eight and 24 weeks
  • PPP funding includes dedicated set-asides for community lenders (CDFIs and MDIs) and business that operate in low-income areas
  • A clarification has been made indicating that interest rates on PPP loans are non-compounding and non-adjustable
  • A clarification has been made indicating that forgivenPPP loans are not taxable and forgiven expenses are tax-deductible.

Like all banks, CNB continues to wait for further guidance from the SBA. We believe the program will open up for our customers later this week or early next week.

Scammers are using social media and hiding behind fake profiles trying to get money or personal information from you. Be on the lookout for these most commonly used scams.

LOTTERY & GIFT CARD SCAM

  • What is it? A post referencing major chain stores, such as Walmart or Starbucks, are giving away free gift cards, or a congratulatory post saying that you have won the lottery. You will be directed to a website where you will be asked for personal details and information.
  • Why it works: These scams are successful due to the general public’s yearning for free items or money.
  • Things to remember: You cannot win a lottery you never entered. Be cautious about giving websites your personal information.

GOSSIP SCAM

  • What is it? A catchy headline will get the reader’s attention. Once the headline is clicked on, it will open a new page and ask the user to download Adobe Flash to be able to read the rest of the article.  Instead of installing Adobe Flash, malware will be installed.
  • Why it works: People are curious!
  • Things to remember: Always look at the URL and make sure it’s credible. If you are ever prompted to download Adobe Flash, do so directly from Adobe’s website.

HEALTHCARE SCAM

  • What is it? This scam will use fake Medicare of Social Security ads and offer simple services such as lost card replacement or a new card for a name change due to marriage. They often require a fee for services that are free from Medicare or Social Security offices.
  • Why it works: Everyone has healthcare needs.
  • Things to remember: Check with other provides regarding the services mentioned in the ad. When in doubt, call the Social Security or Medicare office.

CATFISHING

  • What is it? The scammer uses a fake identity online hoping to start a relationship with someone. Most of the time, they will con people out of money.
  • Why it works: This scam operates on people’s need for love and companionship.
  • Things to remember: Look for inconsistencies in or duplicates of the person’s profile. If the person you are communicating with refuses to meet you in person, chances are, they’re a catfish.

PHOTO OF YOU SCAM

  • What is it? A message will appear in your inbox asking if a certain photo is really you. From there, the message will link to a page mirroring the social media platform you are on and ask you to log in. Scammers are able to obtain your login credentials and access to your account.
  • Why it works: Online and in-person reputation is important!
  • Things to remember: You can change your profile settings to private. This will allow only your connections to message you.  It is also a best practice to change your passwords regularly.

ACCOUNT CANCELLED SCAM

  • What is it? A rather legitimate-looking email from Facebook or Twitter will appear in your inbox stating that your account will be disabled unless action is taken. There will often be a dummy-link somewhere within that email that will take you to a log-in page.  Once you follow the link and enter your login credentials, the scammer has succeeded.  They now have access to your account as well as your login information.
  • Why it works: People like to stay connected on various social media platforms.
  • Things to remember: Be aware of requests that rush you to take action. “Official Messages from Facebook” should come directly from Facebook, so be sure to look at the email these requests are coming from.

THE 419 OR NIGERIAN SCAM

  • What is it? Someone abroad is offering you a large sum of money for helping them move money out of their country. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?  It is- the scammer will ask you for your banking information in order to move the money out of the country. This scam originated in Nigeria, but scammers all over the world now use this method to swipe money.
  • Why it works: This scam promises free money to those individuals wanting to help.
  • Things to remember: DO NOT give your banking information to anyone. Keep your profiles private so random messages don’t show up in your inbox.

STUCK ABROAD SCAM

  • What is it? A friend or member of your family will send a message to you saying they are stuck in another country without a wallet and ask you to send them money so they can return home.
  • Why it works: People trust their loved ones and don’t expect it to be a scammer who is using their social media accounts.
  • Things to remember: Call the person you think you are sending money to verify that they are traveling and are in need of the funds to get home. Remember to never blindly wire anyone money.

IQ SCAM

  • What is it? A ‘free’ quiz that will test your knowledge- but, in order to use it, you need to sign up first.
  • Why it works: People have a need to prove intelligence. Social media platforms are a perfect place to share that.
  • Things to remember: Don’t give up your personal details to get quiz results!

PROFILE VIEWS SCAM

  • What is it? A post will appear on your newsfeed and entice you to see what other users have viewed your profile. The post will include a link, and once clicked, you will be directed to complete a survey that collects your personal data.  That data could be used against you or sold.
  • Why it works: Social standing is significant to some people.
  • Things to remember: Double-check the URLs- they may look the same at first glance, but there might be a missing letter in the address.

Safely navigate the fraud jungle by understanding the various ways fraudsters try to obtain your personal and debit card information.

The more you know, the more you can guard yourself against fraud. Follow these tips and guidelines for preventing fraud.

Personal information

Phishing is a scam in which fraudsters pose as legitimate businesses to trick you into divulging your Social Security number, account numbers, passwords, or other sensitive personal data.

No legitimate business will request this type of information. Don’t give out your personal information.

Card safety

Debit cards are accepted virtually everywhere you use cash and many places where checks aren’t accepted.

  • Use your PIN whenever possible for an extra layer of protection.
  • Set up fraud alerts through online banking and mobile apps.
  • Review financial accounts and monthly statements.
  • Sign your card on the signature panel.
  • Report lost or stolen debit cards immediately to your financial institution.

ATM security

Be vigilant at ATMs. If something seems suspicious, contact your financial institution.

  • Cover the PIN pad with your hand while entering your PIN.
  • Use familiar ATMs in well-lit areas.
  • Watch for shoulder surfing — a camera positioned to obtain your card number. This may look like a small hole drilled above the keypad.
  • Look for skimmers placed over the ATM card slot.
  • Do not use the ATM if the card slot or keypad looks suspicious.

Online shopping

When shopping online, be aware of ways to avoid undue risk and keep your personal information free from fraud.

  • Shop with trusted brands. Look for the green padlock icon and HTTPS:// to ensure you’re on a secure website.
  • Never give private information, such as your Social Security number, passwords, or birthdate, to anyone online.
  • Create strong passwords with more than eight characters, an uppercase letter, and at least one number or special character.
  • Use and update firewall software to protect your computer's information.
  • Avoid free or special product offers — these are usually too good to be true.

If you suspect identity theft or fraud, call CNB Bank & Trust, N.A. immediately.

09.01.2020

Defend yourself against internet scams!

Digital thieves are lying in wait to scam money from you. They send you an email with a plea for help or a promise to earn a lot of money if you pay some simple fees. Beat them at their own game by understanding their top scams.

These scams sometimes play on your emotions and your desire to help people who are less fortunate. Fraudsters will send you an email from what seems like a legitimate business, ask for personal information, and then use it to steal from you. Sometimes they say you need to pay more taxes. Sometimes they pretend to be a kidnapper, saying you need to send money to keep everyone safe. They may even promise you a high-limit, preapproved credit card if you pay processing fees.

Use caution with these types of emails. If an offer seems too good or bad to be true, it probably is.

Do you know that tiny chip that was added to your debit card a few years ago? That little chip has helped reduce fraud due to counterfeit cards by 70% in just two years. But, many ATMs and fuel pumps haven’t converted to the chip technology yet making them prime targets for fraudsters who want to steal your info.

Keep yourself and your card data protected while you’re at the ATM or fuel pump with these simple STEPS:

Set online and mobile banking fraud alerts.

Tug the card reader. Is it loose?

Examine your surroundings.

Protect your PIN; cover it with your hand.

Scan for security tape seal on the pump.

Here are some additional pieces of information that will help keep you safe:

ATM safety

  • Use an ATM in a well-lit area

Prior to inserting your card:

  • Wiggle the card reader. If you notice something suspicious call 911.
  • Cover the PIN pad with your hand when entering your PIN to guard against hidden cameras.

Fuel pump safety

  • Use a pump closest to and facing the store.

Prior to inserting your card:

  • Wiggle the card reader. If you notice something suspicious call 911.
  • Check that security seal tape is intact. If the seal is broke, let the store know and pay inside.
  • Cover the PIN pad with your hand when entering your PIN to guard against hidden cameras.

Set security alerts for added safety and contact CNB Bank & Trust, N.A. whenever you have questions about your accounts or your financial safety.

  • Set your online and mobile banking fraud security alerts.
  • Closely monitor your accounts and call your financial institution if you suspect fraud.

CNB BANK & TRUST, N.A. Stepping up for Small Businesses with PPP Funding

For months now, every facet of “normal” life has been upended by COVID-19. Where and how we work, learn, shop, socialize and even bank have all been affected. Yet, the bright spot amid this sea of change has been America’s enduring spirit as friends and neighbors work together to stay safe, remain connected, and support one another.

A great example of coming together for the greater good is how the nation’s 5,000 community banks rallied around small businesses, which account for roughly 48 percent of the U.S. workforce and serve as the backbone of our nation’s economy.

When stay-at-home orders forced millions of small businesses to curtail or close their operations, community banks like CNB stepped in to lend support.

So when the Small Business Administration (SBA) turned on the spigot for its Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)—which backstops emergency small-business loans from financial institutions to help cover payroll and related costs CNB mobilized every available resource at our disposal to process these loans.

We could not be prouder of our staff, many of whom worked nights and weekends or assumed new roles to get the job done and ensure critical funds were delivered to those who needed it most. In just 11 weeks we processed 888 loans totaling more than $78,000,000, within our Central Illinois, Chicago and St. Louis branch areas. To provide a bit of context, the loan volume for new commercial loan accounts represents 65% percent of what was processed and closed in 2019.

FDIC Chairman Jelena McWilliams recently referred to community banks as “the small engines that could and did and delivered big,” and the numbers certainly seem to support that description. According to the SBA summary of loan approvals through June 6, lenders with less than $50 billion in assets have accounted for more than 65 percent of the 4.5 million approved PPP loans and more than 63 percent of the $511 billion in funds approved since the program's launch. Nationwide, community banks have received hundreds of loan applications through the program ranging in size from less than $50,000 to more than $500,000, according to a recent ICBA survey.

So, as restrictions lift and you venture out to your favorite bakery, barbershop or boutique, you will be met with “open for business” signs and familiar faces waiting to service you.

Even before the PPP launched, we’d begun offering our small businesses options for modifications of loan terms, payment deferrals for up to six months, and adjustments to the rate and term to create lower payments. And we continue to seek ways to contribute to our economy and support local businesses.

Additionally, when funds were allocated for the member and associate member institutions of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago (FHLBC), CNB Bank & Trust applied for and received a $20,000 grant from FHLBC, and decided to match the $20,000 grant with $20,000 of our own money. In total, $40,000 was donated to food shelters in the 17 branch communities the bank serves, with each food shelter receiving at least $2,000. The grant offer, along with matching funds, emphasizes the consistent support that CNB offers to customers, local businesses and communities.

When times are tough you can depend on us, your trusted local community bank. Because at CNB BANK & TRUST relationships are priority one. We consider it our privilege and duty to ensure the financial health and welfare of this community.

The customers and communities we serve are the driving forces behind all that we do. So, we will continue to do what is right for all who call Central Illinois, St. Louis and Chicago home, including the many beloved local small businesses that help keep our Main Streets thriving.

CNB Supporting Local Businesses During COVID-19 Pandemic

CNB Bank & Trust, N.A. has been helping small and local businesses during this unprecedented time. As part of the C.A.R.E.S. Act, the Small Business Administration (SBA) launched the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) allowing small businesses to apply for a special loan that helps keep their workforce employed during the COVID-19 crisis. To date, CNB has processed 836 loans totaling more than $75 million for small businesses within its communities.

In addition to helping local businesses with the PPP loan, each CNB Bank & Trust branch is helping the Bank’s communities in other meaningful ways.

Support Small Businesses and Nonprofit Organizations with COVID-19 Relief Grant Program
Funds have been allocated for the member and associate member institutions of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago (FHLBC), to receive up to $20,000 in COVID-19 Relief Grants. CNB Bank & Trust applied for and received the $20,000 grant from FHLBC, and decided to match the $20,000 grant with $20,000 of its own money. In total, $40,000 will be donated to food shelters in the 17 branch communities the bank now serves, with each food shelter receiving at least $2,000.

The grant offer, along with matching funds, emphasizes the consistent support that CNB offers to customers, local businesses and communities. Tony Heitzig, a Regional President at CNB, commented: “CNB Bank & Trust is always happy to give back to the communities we serve.  We are fortunate to have the means available to help make a difference in the lives of those most in need during these uncertain times.”

CNB’s Regional President, Gary Graham, shared his experience regarding this unique opportunity: “CNB Bank & Trust is happy to partner with the Federal Home Loan bank of Chicago and give back to each of our communities by helping those hardest hit by the corona virus.”

The Bank is thrilled to be able to apply for and be awarded this grant, that will assist its communities during this most difficult time. Dan Walsh, Regional President of CNB’s Chicago area branches stated: “CNB Bank is proud to contribute to local food banks during these very trying times.”

The mission of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago is to provide competitively priced funding to its member institutions, in support of community-based investment activities. Active in Illinois and Wisconsin, FHLBC is one of the eleven Federal Home Loan Banks in the nation that was chartered by Congress to promote homeownership.
